Cherry Optical Holography was started by Greg Cherry and Nancy Gorglione in 1985 to produce, exhibit and sell very limited editions of the best holograms we could make. Nancy's visions as a holographic artist inspired Greg's engineering of optical components such as spin coaters, variable collimator mounts and edgeless plate holders. "The weekend we began living together in Northern California, we poured a couple of tons of cement to celebrate, which became the base of our large format vibration isolation table."

Pictured Below: Wooden armature for cement layer of our large format stable table. Partially inflated inner-tubes underneath the (eventual) cement dampen vibrations. The finished table is pictured below.

Our continuous wave silver halide reflection and transmission holograms are among the most beautiful and innovative holograms in the World. Many of our holographic images have become archetypes in light, inspiring other artists and holographers.

Cherry Optical Holo Lab

Cherry Optical Holography's vibration isolating Stable Table, with Nancy Gorglione making a hologram of a spider plant. In this "set-up," a high power argon laser helps relax stability requirements, while its etalon eliminates the need to measure path lengths.

From where the author sits in 2017! Collectors are slowly awakening to the Golden Age of California Art which took place after World War II, until NOW. This Art eventually encompassed all the beauty and technological innovations channeled down into reality by both, the Hippies, and Silicon Valley. This freedom and the wherewithal to create coincided with the development of laser light. The laser was just the best art tool, at least until the computer came along. With the computer's vast capacity for unifying information supply, the hologram was sadly misplaced in all the excitement. Now, the Internet is reintroducing holographic art media and visions of unity across time and space.

Analog Holography: Every time we make a different hologram, we set up the optical components of the particular laser and optics "camera" geometry we will be using. Mirrors on magnetic mounts, optics and spacial filters are positioned to direct the laser to illuminate both objects and film. Optical set-up meets Photochemistry in the darkroom, with its own special chemical processing. The finished hologram needs a light at a specific angle (often around 45 degrees) for viewing. These challenges would ultimately limit the proliferation of holography as an art media. Yet, from the late 1970's throughout the 1980's and well into the 1990's holography supported its own viable economy. A significant number of artists around the World created, and continue to create, Art with Holography.

At Cherry Optical Holography we've made hundreds of different holograms, exploring subject matter and developing custom techniques. Nancy Gorglione's reflection hologram composites are unique masterpieces of holographic art. Greg Cherry's space-within-space holograms are pure representatives of the magic promised by HOLOGRAPHY. Some of our popular holograms, such as Telescope, Binoculars, and Donations, helped sponsor more ambitious holographic projects which we produced as Cherry Optical Holography. We introduced holography and laser lighting in stage sets and environments, taking these laser media into sculptural and conceptual realms influential to other artists. We've started non profits, designed exhibitions, written catalogs, compiled histories, built web sites, and taken holography out of its small dedicated holography niche into public institutions. Now, we hope to remind the world of the beauty and excitement of holographic and laser art.

Video of PAINTING TIME in SPACE by Cherry Optical Holography
This hologram is a few holograms within a hologram. The clock hands move forward and backward in space. Holography offers the artist the ability to record time in space, all captured on a flat film plane. The moving clock holograms are available in photopolymer as Double Time (pictured beneath this text). The publication, Holographic Universe also contains a copy.

Holograms, unlike the pictures of holograms in this document, are truly three dimensional.

Look for complete pictures of almost all of our holograms in the upcoming document,
If You Can See It, It's Not There.

There are two basic types of analog holograms, transmission and reflection holograms. The names are derived from their treatment of light: either transmitting it to reflecting it... There are numerous variations within the two types. Please follow the links for further information. Our Transmission Holograms are usually holographic film laminated to glass or Plexiglas. Transmission holographic techniques include open aperture and rainbow holograms, often combined in sculptural installations.

Reflection holograms reflect the viewing light. Our reflection holograms are usually image-planed onto glass plates from transmission Masters. One-of-a-kind Reflection Hologram Composites by Nancy Gorglione combine multiple reflection holograms into large holographic scenes designed to tell a story. This is a working list of various hologram iterations in no particular order. The images on this page are intended as an introduction to the artwork of Nancy Gorglione and Greg Cherry, created mostly through our company, Cherry Optical Holography.

by Nancy Gorglione, with photographs by Greg Cherry,
Jeffrey W. Milton, the Author, and others...

A Virtual Examination of Holographic Phenomena

Nancy Gorglione's beautiful book pictures hundreds of holograms and many pivotal laser performances and installations. Innovative Text for this sumptuous historical record is graphically arranged by Gorglione from contemporary sources - an exceptional volume of art on the Golden Age of Holography.

Greg Cherry's self portrait in the lab with his Telescope Master. Right, Telescope view thru the eyepiece; Telescope Hologram.

A hologram is a true, three-dimensional image created through the positive interference of laser light. Holograms are recorded with lasers onto fine photographic emulsions coated onto film or glass. The finished hologram is a diffraction grating which bends the illumination light back onto the path of the original object. Holograms, unlike the pictures of holograms in this document, are truly three dimensional, with depth and projection.

Le Legend de la Hora, The Legend of the Hour, multicolor reflection hologram composite by Nancy Gorglione, partial view. Private Collection.

Time, and the rhythms of the passage of time.

A poet in the house of Cherry Optical Holography, Nancy Gorglione has made hundreds of holograms and "'about a thousand" Hologram Masters. Gorglione brought a formal art education and contemporary design sensibility to the origins of art holography. Gorglione's work is known for wide angles of view and parallax plays, incredible colors, and color fields; and a willingness to stretch both aesthetic and technical boundaries of holography. Her work inspires others with complex subject matter, expressed in relatively large holographic art pieces. Today, her holographic work ranges from custom hot stamped prints to large holographic scenery from another world. Gorglione also directs the Laser Light & Percussion Orchestra, a community orchestra of collective light and sound.

Invitations to exhibitions of holograms by Nancy Gorglione and Greg Cherry. Cherry designed these invitations, creating photo masks of the artists' silhouettes, all done in the darkroom, before photoshop. Cherry applied similar masking of three dimensional scenes, to create his space-within-space holograms.

Greg Cherry is the maker of some of the most popular holograms ever created. Space-within-space scenes, and holograms-within-holograms are responsible for delighting viewers in   about 75 countries with the mysteries of holography! Greg's holographic feats of near magic are regularly performed, his most recent being the Holographic Displays with self-contained lighting. Cherry's prototype engineering skills enable him to create musical laser scanning machines; while no metal is safe from Cherry's digital mill carvings, custom coinage, hot stamp sculpture, and scratch-o-grams.
